T-Mobile unlock policy in 2026, written for the shop that holds the phone
Our T-Mobile services
As The STACKS App sells them right now. Each row is one service: its condition, turnaround and refund term.
IPHONE
| SERVICE | CONDITION | TURNAROUND | REFUND |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid off unlock | Paid in full and not owed on any account. | 1 to 5 days | Refund if it fails |
| Premium unlock | Any status, including blocked, unpaid or under contract. Slower and dearer; the condition the service states applies. | 3 to 7 business days | Refund if it fails |
ANDROID
| SERVICE | CONDITION | TURNAROUND | REFUND |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid off unlock | Paid in full and not owed on any account. | 1 to 15 hours | Refund if it fails |
The menu is live from the app and changes without notice. A service that is not listed is not on sale right now. All services.
If you run a repair counter, a buyback desk or a wireless dealership, T-Mobile phones cross your bench every day and most of them are still locked. This page sets out T-Mobile's own rules as they stand on 2026-10-28, what "qualifies to unlock" actually means, how to read the status on the device, and what a wholesale unlock can and cannot do when the person who owned the account is no longer in the picture.

The rules, from the policy itself
T-Mobile publishes its policy on one page, the SIM Unlock Policy. Three conditions apply to every device:
- The device was sold by T-Mobile or is a T-Mobile authorised device. For anything else, T-Mobile tells you to go to the carrier or manufacturer that sold it (source).
- The device must not be reported lost, stolen or blocked (source).
- The account it sits on must be in good standing, and the device must meet the postpaid or prepaid test below (source).
Postpaid. The device must have been active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days on the requesting line, and if it was financed or leased, every payment must be satisfied and the device paid in full (source). Droid Life's February 2026 summary adds that a cancelled account needs a zero balance before the device will unlock (source).
Prepaid. At least 365 days must have passed since the device was activated on T-Mobile. There is a shortcut: if fewer than 365 days have passed, the prepaid account must have had more than $100 in refills during that period for each active line, and more than 14 days must have passed since the device was purchased. Either way, no more than 2 unlocks may have been completed per line of service in the last 12 months (source).
Military. Deployed personnel who are customers in good standing can be unlocked early on provision of overseas orders (source).
T-Mobile closes with two lines worth remembering: the policy may change without notice, and T-Mobile may deny any unlock request "in our sole discretion if the request is an effort to defraud the company" (source).
T-MOBILE LOCK TIMELINE
What "qualifies to unlock" means, and what happens next
Qualification is not a request you file. T-Mobile's approach, in its own words, is that once a device qualifies, "T-Mobile will automatically and remotely unlock the device within two business days if device supports remote unlock" (source). Devices that cannot be unlocked remotely get a notification on the device within two business days with next steps (source).
So when a customer tells you their phone "qualifies", the only question is whether the account that owns the device has actually passed the test. The account holder can see this directly: sign in to My T-Mobile, select the line, choose "Check device unlock status", and the progress toward qualification shows under the device image. In the T-Life app the same field is called "Device lock status" under the Manage tab (source).
The two business day promise is not a T-Mobile invention. It comes from the CTIA Consumer Code unlocking commitments adopted on February 11, 2014, which say carriers will unlock qualifying devices, or ask the manufacturer to, "within two business days after receiving a request", and will unlock prepaid devices "no later than one year after initial activation" (source, FCC order DA 26-43, footnote 11). T-Mobile's 365 day prepaid rule sits exactly at that one year ceiling.
The Mobile Device Unlock app and the other device paths
Older T-Mobile Android phones ship with a preinstalled Device Unlock app. The steps are: open Device Unlock, choose Device Unlock then Continue, wait for the phone to talk to the server, then choose Permanent Unlock (source). The same support page lists the current paths by brand:
- iPhone. Settings > General > About. If Carrier Lock says "No SIM restrictions", it is unlocked. A locked but qualifying iPhone needs T-Mobile to submit the unlock, so the account holder contacts them (source).
- Samsung. Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings > Network Unlock > Permanent Unlock (source).
- Google Pixel. Download the T-Mobile Device Unlock (Pixel) app from the Play Store, choose the status check, then Permanent Unlock (source).
- Motorola, OnePlus and others. Network Unlock sits under Mobile Networks or SIM & network in Settings; a Motorola that says it is unlocked but is not can refresh the request from the SIM Unlock message's menu (source).
- Hotspots and some tablets need an unlock code from T-Mobile. iPads, Apple Watches and Galaxy Watches are sold unlocked (source).
Metro's version of the policy carries one extra warning that matters on a repair bench: "Rooting your device will disable the unlock application" (source).
Metro by T-Mobile
Metro is the same company with a longer clock. Its Phone Unlock Policy requires that the device was sold by Metro, is not reported lost, stolen or blocked, and that "Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date". Qualifying devices are remotely unlocked within two business days, with a notification for devices that need manual steps, and deployed military customers can be unlocked on deployment papers by calling 888-863-8768 (source). The jump from 180 to 365 days happened in 2023 and drew public criticism from the then FCC chair (source). Whether Metro also honours a refill shortcut like T-Mobile prepaid is unverified: forum posts describe one, but the official policy page lists only the 365 day line.
Financed devices
A financed T-Mobile phone is locked until the last payment clears, full stop. The policy says every payment must be satisfied and the device paid in full before it qualifies (source). For a buyback shop this is the single most important check: a device with an open equipment installment balance can be reported and blocked after you have bought it, after you have unlocked it, and after you have resold it. See financed and blacklisted devices for how that happens and how to check.
The trade-in case: qualifying device, account holder gone
Here is the situation the free route does not cover. A customer trades in a two year old T-Mobile iPhone. It was paid off long ago, it has never been reported lost or stolen, and it has been active far longer than 40 days. By T-Mobile's own rules it qualifies. But T-Mobile pushes the unlock to the device on the account holder's line, and the account holder has left your store, moved carriers, or closed the account. You cannot sign in as them, and T-Mobile customer service will not act for a third party.
A wholesale IMEI unlock is for exactly this device: a paid off phone with nobody left to press the button. The result is the same permanent unlock the account holder would have received. Our T-Mobile services are listed near the top of this page as The STACKS App sells them; each row states its condition, turnaround and refund term. Whatever the service, a device with an open balance can be blocked by the carrier afterwards regardless of lock state, so run the checks on the financed and blacklisted page before you buy it.
Two more checks before you pay for any unlock. First, Activation Lock: an iPhone that still shows "iPhone Locked to Owner" is tied to the previous owner's Apple Account, and Apple's guidance is not to take ownership until it has been removed (source). A carrier unlock does nothing about that. Second, the blacklist: run the IMEI through the free CTIA checker described on the financed and blacklisted page before you buy, not after.
If it is your own phone, use T-Mobile
If you are reading this because you own one T-Mobile phone and want it unlocked, you do not need us. Sign in to My T-Mobile, check the device unlock status, and if it qualifies T-Mobile will do it free within two business days (source). Unlock STACKS sells to approved businesses; see how approval works.
The FCC context in one paragraph
In January 2026 the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau waived the rule that had forced Verizon to unlock after 60 days, saying the result is "a uniform industry standard" where every national carrier follows the CTIA Consumer Code (source). T-Mobile was never under the 60 day rule, so nothing changed for it; its 40 day postpaid and 365 day prepaid clocks are the standard the rest of the market is now converging on. A separate FCC rulemaking proposing a 60 day rule for all carriers, opened in 2024, was still pending at the time of that order (source).
Questions shops ask
How long does a T-Mobile phone have to be active before it can be unlocked?
Postpaid devices must be active on the requesting line for at least 40 days and be paid in full. Prepaid devices need 365 days since activation, or more than 14 days since purchase plus more than $100 in refills per line on the account.
What does 'qualifies to unlock' mean on a T-Mobile account?
It means the device has met every rule in the SIM Unlock Policy: sold by T-Mobile, not reported lost, stolen or blocked, on an account in good standing, and past the 40 day or 365 day threshold with any financing paid off. T-Mobile then unlocks it automatically within two business days if it supports remote unlock.
Can a repair shop unlock a customer's T-Mobile phone through T-Mobile?
Only the account holder can. T-Mobile checks qualification against the account the device is on, so a shop or buyback business holding a device with no account access cannot use the free route. That is the gap a wholesale unlock fills; our T-Mobile services and their conditions are listed on this page.
Does T-Mobile unlock a phone that still has a balance on it?
Not through T-Mobile: financed or leased devices must have all payments satisfied before T-Mobile unlocks them, and a device with an open balance can be blacklisted later for non-payment. Our T-Mobile services, with the condition each one applies, are listed on this page.
How do I check whether a T-Mobile iPhone is unlocked?
On the iPhone go to Settings, General, About and read the Carrier Lock line. 'No SIM restrictions' means unlocked. On a T-Mobile account you can also open the line and choose Check device unlock status.
What is the Metro by T-Mobile unlock rule?
Metro unlocks a device free of charge 365 days after its activation date if it was sold by Metro and is not reported lost, stolen or blocked. The unlock is pushed remotely within two business days of qualification.
