UScellular is a carrier in transition. T-Mobile closed its purchase of UScellular's wireless customers and retail stores on August 1, 2025, the spectrum business that remained was renamed Array Digital Infrastructure, and the service now trades as "UScellular, now a part of T-Mobile" while customers and stores move across (source). For a shop that matters in two ways: the phones in the bin were sold under UScellular's old policy, and the people answering the phone are increasingly T-Mobile's. This page gives the published UScellular rules, says plainly which parts could not be verified live, and lays out the trade-in case.

A note on the source
UScellular's Device Unlocking Policies page lived at m.uscellular.com/legal/mobile-wireless-device-unlocking. On 2026-10-28 that address returned a 301 redirect to the t-mobile.com home page, and the www version did the same. The figures below are therefore the last published UScellular policy as search engines indexed it, not text read from a live page today. Every number in the next three sections is unverified in that sense (source).
Postpaid: the 120 day locking period
The published policy set "a 120-day locking period" for postpaid iPhones and Android phones bought at regular price or paid in full, and said that "as soon as is practical after the locking period is completed" UScellular would automatically unlock the device if the account was in good standing, with no action needed from the customer (source). The policy table varied the end point by how the phone was bought (source):
- iPhone on installment: complete the 36 month installment contract, or pay off the balance early, plus 120 days of activity.
- Android on a subsidy contract: complete the contract term.
- Android on installment: pay off the balance, or 36 months.
Early unlocks inside the locking period were listed for three cases: military customers with deployment papers for a location outside UScellular coverage, customers who paid in full and had been active at least 120 days, and former postpaid customers who had settled all obligations (source).
Prepaid: 120 or 180 days
The prepaid split was by platform: "Apple iPhones: 120 Days; Android Phones: 180 Days", unlocked automatically provided the device was active on the UScellular network (source). Both sit inside the one year ceiling the CTIA Consumer Code allows for prepaid (source). Third party guides quoting 12 months for UScellular prepaid conflict with the carrier's own published table and are not used here.
What T-Mobile says now
T-Mobile's own postpaid rule, for comparison, is that the phone was sold by T-Mobile, is not reported lost, stolen or blocked, sits on an account in good standing, has been active at least 40 days, is paid in full if financed, and is then unlocked on request (source). A UScellular customer who has been migrated to a T-Mobile account and buys a new phone is buying under that rule, not the 120 day one. Which rule applies to a given device turns on where and when it was bought, and the IMEI is the only reliable way to find out.
How to check lock status
With the official page gone, use the device. On iPhone, Settings > General > About, scroll to Carrier Lock; "No SIM restrictions" means unlocked. On recent Samsung phones, Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network lock status. The blunt test is a SIM from another carrier: if it registers, the lock is gone; if the phone asks for an unlock code or rejects the SIM, it is not.
The trade-in case
UScellular's published route was automatic: wait out the period on an active account and the carrier pushes the unlock. A phone that left its account early, was traded in during the 120 days, or sat on an installment plan that was never finished, missed that push and stays locked with nobody left to ask. UScellular Customer Service deals with the account holder, and after August 2025 the account holder may not even know which company holds the account. The value gap this creates is covered on locked vs unlocked value, and the financed and blacklisted page explains the free check for a device whose owner stopped paying, because an IMEI reported after the sale stops working everywhere.
Our UScellular services are listed near the top of this page as STACKS sells them: each row states the condition it applies, the turnaround and whether it is refundable if it fails. A carrier unlock does nothing for Activation Lock; Apple's guidance is not to take a used iPhone that still asks for the previous owner's Apple Account (source).
If it is your own phone
Call UScellular Customer Service, or T-Mobile if your account has moved; the carrier route is free (source). Unlock STACKS serves approved businesses. See how approval works.
Regulatory context
UScellular was never under a federal unlock timetable; the only such rule bound Verizon through its 2007 700 MHz C Block licence, and the FCC waived it on January 12, 2026 (source). The standard that shaped the 120 and 180 day figures is the CTIA Consumer Code of February 11, 2014: publish the policy, unlock postpaid devices once the contract or financing is fulfilled, unlock prepaid within a year, notify or unlock remotely, act within two business days, and unlock for deployed military (source).
Questions shops ask
How long is the UScellular locking period?
UScellular's published policy set a 120 day locking period for postpaid iPhones and Android phones bought at regular price or paid in full, with automatic unlock after that if the account was in good standing. The page now redirects to T-Mobile, so treat the figure as the last published policy.
What about UScellular phones on installment?
The published table said an iPhone on installment unlocked after the 36 month contract was completed or paid off early plus 120 days active; an Android on installment after payoff or 36 months; an Android on a subsidy contract after the contract term.
What are the UScellular prepaid periods?
120 days for Apple iPhones and 180 days for Android phones, unlocked automatically while active on the UScellular network, per the published policy.
Who handles a UScellular unlock now?
T-Mobile closed its purchase of UScellular's wireless customers and stores on August 1, 2025. T-Mobile's support page says to request a UScellular unlock from UScellular Customer Service, and that before 120 days a paid off device on an account in good standing can be requested early.
Can a shop unlock a UScellular trade-in through the carrier?
The published route is the customer's own account or UScellular Customer Service, so a shop holding the phone with no account holder has no carrier route. The UScellular services STACKS sells, with the condition each applies, are listed on this page.
